Day 115...What To Do When Things Are Just Not Working

Welcome to Day 115...

Okay so I think an intervention is in order

Over the past few weeks I have been writing and editing, but my motivation is low, my edge has dulled and my output has been... well let's just say it's been less than stellar.  I'm moving slower...my attempts have been laborious and I feel a bit out of my groove.

I'm usually better than this.  So what's the problem?

Any number of reasons...including the season change and shorter days, even suffice to say the #busywriterslife has been exorbitantly busy lately.

But let's not talk problems...let's talk solutions.

Here's my game plan for getting back on track:

Build Positive Momentum
It's all about getting back into good habits.  So I'll focus on what I want to accomplish (finishing my book NEVER LET ME GO) and then building the steps and activities into my day to start achieving small goals.  As far as those small goals...

Set 1-3 Small Goals Each Day
I have lots of scenes in various stages in the pipeline - 3 are close to done - another 3 need a fair amount of work.  In the scheme of things, all that plot development isn't a bad thing, but here's the problem...I have too much in front of me to tackle so I'm jumping around way too much and not moving anything from the "in-progress" box to the "completed" box. So...instead of looking at everything in front of me, I'll be setting a series of mini goals around the scenes with due date and time frames.

Schedule My Writing Time
Really schedule - like set my alarm clock kind-of-schedule.  I usually have trouble sleeping past 4 am, but the change in seasons and the darker mornings have had me lounging in bed well past 5 am.  Before I know it, my power time of writing has come and gone and the craziness of my day had begun.

Write First
And by that I mean, don't check emails, social media, start unloading the dishwasher etc. My output and creativity is off the charts when I dig in straight away.

Go for Balance
A little R& R everyday in the form of reading or some Reality TV watching.  My days and weeks are so busy and I'm too apt to feel guilty about what doesn't get done. Some scheduled break time will keep me guilt free and balanced.

Workout and Drink Lots of Water
It puts me in the zone mentally and physically - my energy level, mood and creativity is so much better when I'm taking excellent care of myself.

So tomorrow begins anew.  If you've lost your way a bit, why not join me in committing to getting back on track?  Let's do this...

And of course, here's Today's Takeaway Lesson...

"The Size of Your Problems is Nothing Compared to Your Ability to Solve Them - Don't Overestimate Your Problems and Don't Underestimate Yourself"
