Day 244...This Fixes Just About Everything...














Welcome to Day 244...

A confession here...

Since before my vacation my writing effort has been less than stellar.  What can I say...the normal chaos that ensues before you can go put your backside on a lounge chair in a sunny & warm climate becomes all consuming.

Dogs to the sitter...mail stopped...laundry...packing...info emails on our plans to the family...you know the drill.  #busywriterslife

I've been back for a few days now and I still haven't gotten into a good writing groove.  I can blame part of it on the chaos of re-entry into our normal life...groceries...laundry...catching up on work...

But the other part of my lax effort has to do with the fact that my motivation and drive has been focused elsewhere.  

Let me explain...

I've spent years doing walking and other low impact exercising but right before I went away, I started on a new training program...
cycling...swimming...running.  I even joined a gym. Which is crazy because I've never, ever belonged to a gym before.  

And I've jumped all in on this...spin cycling classes...400 yards of swimming...3.5 miles of walk/run.

I keep planning more of all these crazy and slightly addicting activities into my days, I'm even tracking my efforts, and you know what?

The very short term outcome of my new workouts has been surprising...more energy...more strength and a number on the scale that I haven't seen in a very long time.

So what's the moral of this story?

Good, no great outcomes can be had when you commit to one key component.

The answer is simply MORE.

So the test this week is to translate that key factor to the work on my book.

Do More...write more...edit more...spend one More half hour on the book than I had originally planned.

Day 243...Some Good Reasons Why...














Welcome to Day 243...

So in case you're still on the fence about booking some time away from your everyday life, even for just a day or a weekend trip, here are some compelling reasons direct from Mary's Mighty Muck blog on why vacations matter...

1.  Your brain will work better. No really, the Dali Llama can’t be wrong. Changing your perspective and quieting your mind is the path to enlightenment. Enlightenment = a better working brain.
You might have a kick ass new idea.  New ideas come when you’re relaxed. Removing the day-to-day urgent interruptions inherent in an office environment gives your mind space to release the ideas that are there.

2. Your relationships will grow. It never fails. Whenever I go on vacation with my family or friends, we learn new things about each other. I always end a vacation with a sense of greater bonding and appreciation for the people I love. If you leave your loved ones at home, the same is true. The process of missing someone increases intimacy.

3. You’ll get emotionally stronger by letting go. It’s true. Even if it scares you to leave your job for a while, just the exercise of doing it will make you that much stronger and more confident when you return.

4. People will appreciate you at work. I know, I know, people act like they’re mad at your leaving. They’ll send you desperate e-mails reminding you just how much you've left undone and what a mess you’ll return to but it’s all a facade.

5. You might learn something. It’s hard to learn really new different stuff when you’re doing the same thing day in and day out. Learning new things expands your mind and your ability to adapt and boy don’t we all need adaptive skills right now?

6. You might meet someone new who impacts your life. Get out of your rut and expand your universe. Who knows who you might meet.

7. You’ll feel happier. No matter how happy you think you feel in your “secure” mode, you can always feel happier. Getting sunshine, moving your body, and experiencing new things is proven to increase endorphins and endorphins lead to feelings of happiness.

Day 242...A Must Today













Welcome to Day 242...

Here I am...

Back to business...
Back to work...
Back to writing...

After a week away in the Florida sun, gazing at palm trees, eating great food and lounging poolside, I'm back.

I have to say, after a great vacation, re-entry into my real world hasn't been all that easy. But while I may be still longing for that warm weather and lounge chair, the break was a bit altering. I feel good. Stronger. Motivated.  Ready to slay some big goals.

It's amazing what a little change of scenery, change of routine and some R&R with the family can do.

I remember having a similar feeling a number of years ago - coming back from another big vacation.  It was around that time I decided to jump in and write my first book.

Who knows where my newly recharged brain and spirit will lead me for the rest of 2015?

If you haven't booked a vacation yet for 2015, put it on your to do list.  Funds a bit limited? Even a stay-cation will work.  Just plan something, anything to get you out of your normal routine and on the path to fun.
