Day 96...This is Terrifying & Creepy...

Okay, nothing terrifying or creepy here, but I'm in the Halloween mood so I thought I'd throw that in...

Welcome to Day 96 and Day 31...the last day of our Writing Challenge...

Took the day off from work today.  Normally I'd be happy to report how much writing and editing went down today...but alas that's not what happened.  I was full blown into fundraising mode, last minute shopping, soliciting donations and more emails and journal set up.  (Excited and can not wait for this event to come - it's just days away...)

So for me, it was not a great way to end our last day.

But its nothing to be spooked by...

Here's the thing, I may not have finished my final draft, but I got a heck of a lot closer than I was 31 days ago.

More words, more scenes, more updated plot lines...It's all good.  And I'll keep at.  A new plan for the month, more goals to slay.

I get the joke, it's all about hard work and commitment.  And there's nothing scary here...a missed deadline is fixable, workable.  In fact after almost 50 years on the planet, I don't sweat the small stuff, the people I love are happy and healthy and for that I feel blessed.  It really is that simple.

The writing that I do, it's all a big bonus.  A bonus that challenges me every single day.  So I'll forge on.

Day 94...You Need Both...

Welcome to Day 94...and...Day 29 of our Writing Challenge.  Got in 984 words of writing this morning.  

So yesterday I talked about embracing your dreams...BIG dreams.  But to make real and lasting change in your life and find success, dreaming is only part of the equation.

You also need to be a DOER.

In fact you need to DO a lot of things...

Research
Planning
Writing
Editing
Marketing
More Writing
More Editing
More Marketing
A Self Evaluation of What's Working and What's Not
Going Back and Fixing What's Not Working
And Then Doing & Doing Some More.

Here's the thing.  For the really big dreams, for the really big goals it has to be part of who you are and what you do...everyday.

It's the commitment of time, of energy, of focus, of action that will transform the visions in your head to the reality you live everyday.

Day 93...The Only Dream Worth Having...

Welcome to Day 93...and Day 28 of our Writing Challenge.

So I got a whole 20 minutes of editing done this morning.  Not what I would have hoped for, but there were some other things going on at the homestead...

Specifically, it was 2 hrs worth of planning, updating notes & spreadsheets, and a whole slew of emails written for a fundraising event I'm co-chairing for my son's high school.

The event has been in the works for a few months now...300 people...lots of raffle prizes to be coordinated...and a whole slew of details to be finalized.  Oh, and it's next week.

Like most people, when things get crazy I like to daydream a bit.  Mine has to do with heading down south when my youngest is out of college and finding some place fabulous to live - like Charleston or Savannah.  Beautiful, historic cities, great restaurants, great culture and right on the water.  Sounds heavenly right? 

The thing is, I've never really spent much time in either place.  Just a quick drive through when I was a teen - en route to Florida on a family vacation.  So I don't know anything about neighborhoods to live in, programs for my son, work opportunities for me and my husband, that plus I'd have to get the family on board for a big move.  

Which is why some might say my day dream is little more than pipe dream.

The definition of pipe dream is a plan, desire or idea that will not likely work.

Well I don't buy it.  I mean where would we be without our big dreams?  Model Ts, electricity, computers, iPads - at one time they were all someone's pipe dream.

So the lesson is, don't listen to the naysayers.

Four years ago my pipe dream was writing and publishing my first book.  Now I'm almost finished with my 5th.

My next pipe dream is achieving annual sales of 100,000 books per year. 

For those willing to plan, to work and to give it their all, there's no such thing as dreams that won't work.  Just dreams that haven't been realized yet.

Day 92...Hail to the Self...

Welcome to Day 92 and Day 27 of our Writing Challenge.  I got in 710 words this morning and spent some time thinking about what it takes to be a successful.

Like most of you I'm working towards creating an extraordinary writing and publishing career.  And like I've said so many times before, self-publishing usually means you're a one person show.  I do get some help on my book covers and my editing, but the writing, the formatting to publish, the marketing, the business side of writing, it's all on me.

Which means there's a whole lot of SELF that goes into making it all work...

SELF Discipline...simply showing up and scheduling the time to write, to edit, to be in touch with your novel and to bring it to completion, EVERYDAY.

SELF Motivation...staying in the game and working hard, even when you want to zone out with some reality TV, or social media.

SELF Evaluation...Giving yourself an honest and yes sometimes critical review of how everything from your plot lines to your marketing plans are going.  Like I said yesterday, keep what works, change what doesn't.

Day 91...Reaching New Plateaus...

Welcome to Day 91 and Day 26 of our Writing Challenge...

I did 2 hours of editing this morning...

Went grocery shopping...

Went to church and...

Was home by 8:45 am.

Seriously, something magical happens when your in your groove in your power hours.

Though likewise, I'll get settled into bed at night with my laptop - hoping to get some work done and  I struggle to keep my eyes open.

What's the lesson here?

Keep with what works...change what doesn't.

Start by recognizing what's already going right...knowing what stimulates your creativity, what keeps you focused, what increases your output...figure out the time, the place and the method, and stick with it.

The next step isn't so easy, but if you can master it, it'll help you reach new plateaus.

That means fixing what's broken.

My first book Deadly Shadows, took almost four years to write.  Four years. 

My second book, One Step Closer took just 8 months.  So what was the big difference?  Well, I realized something wasn't working - every word I wrote, I struggled with making just right.  Simply put I was writing and editing at the same time and it really killed my creativity and slowed the process.  That's when I started using a left brain/right brain writing style.  I now write using stream of conscious - getting as many ideas as possible out of my brain and on to the computer screen, then I go back and do a rigorous edit.  Now I always have a starting point and markers for new scenes and plot ideas, so when I do edit, the volume and pace of my output has increased exponentially.

Another case in point?  I edited and re-edited the drafts for my first 2 books and I still ended up with lots of mistakes, time-consuming, negative review inducing - mistakes.  I finally got the joke and turned my drafts over to professionals.  The net effect? A more polished book that I was able to get to market much, much quicker. 

Take some time today and assess what is working in your writing career.

Day 90...How to Finish Strong...

Welcome to Day 90...

I'm Baaack...

Was away all week at a work conference and did actually get in some writing and editing.
We're at Day 25 of our Writing Challenge and staring down the home stretch.  

My goal when I started?  It was to get my final draft done.

Will I get there?

Truth is, I'm not sure.

I still have 1 major scene and 2 plot lines to flush out.  Those 2 plot lines could very well translate into 10 plus scenes.  And they're my most difficult to write - it includes the deadly encounters/rescue scenes which are action packed, fast paced and filled with big suspense.

But I'm up for the challenge and I believe wholly in the saying Finish Strong...

Besides I'm also thrilled with my progress so far...So let's keep moving...
