Welcome to Day 225...
Yesterday I mentioned how I wanted to hype up my work outs. Part of that plan includes doing some long distance cycling.
Here's the problem.
The most I've done on a bike in the past few years involves an annual leisurely bike ride at my in-laws beach house. We head out on the bike and look at some beautiful houses on the beach and the bay.
Which means I have a bit of way to go between now and getting out there for a 5, 8 or even 10 mile bike ride.
Truth be told the whole thing scares me a little bit. Tapping into a new level of stamina, the open road, the speed, the turns, the cars on the road. And as we all know, fear is a tricky thing.
So much of it gets caught up in our head. Doesn't matter if it a new exercise goal or writing a book. Our fearful thoughts get bigger and more real to us that what the reality truly is.
It was just like finishing my first novel. The idea of it is actually way scary than what it take to get it done.
Which means if I'm really going to do get on that bike, I need to face my fears.
The best way?
SENSITIZE - slowly and positively exposing yourself to the situation.
You have to define the elements and outcomes and results that surround the action or activity. The key is to then slowly get comfortable with those elements and outcomes.
As far as me and my riding?
Well step 1 has been joining a cycle class with the goal of building my confidence and stamina on the bike. I'm happy to say I held my own today at my first 6 am class (and I got in a 3.2 mile ride!)
Stay tuned for step 2.
