Day 221...How to Create a Great Book Cover...

Welcome to Day 221.....

Between yesterday and today, I got a few hours of writing in, so to reward myself I took a break this afternoon to start planning the cover for my upcoming release, NEVER LET ME GO.

I can unabashedly say, I love all my book covers.  I paid an outside service, 99 Designs, to do my first cover and my sister Teri helped design the rest of them.  You can sneak a peek at all my books on the scroll bar above.

So how do you go about making a great cover?

Read on...

Study Other Covers In Your Genre
This is the easiest part.  Simply go to Amazon.com and do a search under your favorite authors.  What's great about Amazon is that you have quick visual access of lots of other recommended titles.  Or head out to the grocery store, library, or drug store and take a step back.  Which covers grab your attention?  Now, what was it about the cover that drew you in? Colors, photos, the font (size and type) of the title?  Start getting a good sense of what you liked and how you'd like your own cover to be all laid out.

What Is the Picture That Defines Your Story?
As I'm writing my book, I actually begin to visualize the images that will help define my story. You can use a picture of a landscape - beach, lake, mountain, or a picture of a couple, a close up of a face.  It's really up to you.  What picture will link your reader to your storyline?

Consider Other Add-In Elements
Blood-red blood tear drops, splattering of blood, a mirror image, a sunset.  Once you have your main image, think of ways to enhance it with secondary images.  Don't over do here, but be creative with making your defining photo even better.

Find Great Photos
Istock and Shutterstock are my go-to sites for low price stock photos.  I have an account with each and when I'm ready to work on my cover, I spend a fair amount time searching through their library of photos.  You can even set up a holding file on the sites to save the ones your considering.

Enjoy the Process
I love writing, but as we all know sometimes it takes work, lots of work.  Yes your book cover a key marketing piece for your novel, but between the photos, title placement, font type, you should have fun with designing it.

Ask For Advice
As you complete one or two mock ups of the cover, get some input from friends, family, folks you trust.

Day 217... Signs You're in Full Blown Procrastination Mode

Welcome to Day 217...

Recently, my computer has been like a giant boulder sitting in the middle of the room...I pass it, I walk around it, I can't not see it...

I know I should be writing more.  I'm so very close to finishing my manuscript, but between work, home, the kid's schedules, and 2 lovable but needy dogs, I've been feeling over committed lately...very over committed.

And part of me wanted to shut down something.  Anything.  And I ended up choosing my book. Why?  Because it's the one thing that I really don't have an outward obligation to...

It won't fire me for lack of performance (something I can't say about my day job)...
I don't need to feed it or make sure it doesn't miss the bus...
I e-publish so I don't have a contract or fixed deadline dates...

Which is why, over the past week, I've neglected the heck out of my writing.  And now I'm in full blown avoidance mode.  Or call it procrastination. It doesn't matter.  All I know is that my writing momentum has been lost. And all this avoidance is adding days, weeks, even months to the goal I had set out to do.

So here's the big question.  Are you in Full Blown Procrastination Mode?  Here are some tell tale signs...

  • You're checking social media so often you begin to notice only one new item is appearing each time on the feed.
  • You're doing mindless internet searches...like for real estate and you're not planning on moving in the distant future or for a new car that you don't have any intention of driving.
  • You're taking long breaks...really long breaks that aren't relative to the time and effort of work you're putting in.
  • Everything, and I mean everything else comes first before your writing... laundry...cleaning out closets...filing...grocery shopping...making long over due appointments for cars and the dentist...you get the picture.
  • Downplaying just how much the goal of writing and releasing your book really means to you.
As they say...the first part of fixing a problem is admitting you have one.

Day 136...How To Create a Great Villain

Welcome to Day 136...

I love the genre that I write - Romantic suspense.  And part of what makes a good romantic suspense novel great, is making sure there's a good villain in the mix.  Someone to add suspense, conflicts, thrills...

So how can you create a great villain?

Make Them Unrecognizable
I always feel the best villains are hiding in plain sight - especially to our hero or heroine. They present a much better facade than the evil lurking below the surface.  A good villain can be prominent, successful, wealthy, even kind and helpful.  It's the one you'd never saw coming.

Make Them Unredeemable
Even when they have the chance to right a wrong or to take the kinder, gentler path, the villain just can't seem to do so.  They have an unstoppable agenda, which means nothing and no one will get in their way.

Make Them Complicated
What's the back story?  Was your villain born bad?  Or was there a singular or series of events that rocked their world and their goodness?  Give your villain a driving force behind all that evil.

Make Them Brilliant
Carrying out calculated schemes and murders is no easy task.  The best villains are masters at planning, execution and hiding in plain sight.

That's all for now...Keep an eye out for a future post on creating a great heroine.

'Til then...

Day 126...Part 2 of How to Get Out of a Writing Slump...

Welcome to Day 126 and...Part 2 of How to Get Out of a Writing Slump...

So yesterday my post focused overcoming a writing slump by tackling lack of motivation.

Today let's talk about another reason for a writing slump - Fear.

So when it comes to our writing, what exactly are we so afraid of?  And how can we move past them?

Writing A Book Is Hard.
Yes it is, but think about the things in your life that are worth having - your family, your career, other dreams and goals.  Even if they're more work, or require more time from you, aren't they worth it?  Think back over your life, you've met other challenging goals head on haven't you?  Well then you can write your novel.

I Won't Finish It
Well if you never start you certainly won't.  And yes it's a big task which can be daunting, but if you break it down into smaller tasks - finishing a scene or a chapter, drafting an outline, you're already well on your way.  Stop putting it off and start today.  Jump in and build some momentum.

No One Is Going to Like It
This comes from a much larger deep rooted fear - that we're not good enough, that no one likes us, that we'll never be as cool as the cool kids.  At some point in your life you have to break free from this limited belief about yourself.  Why not today?  Craft a great story and I guarantee you they will come.

Here's a few other pointers when dealing with fear.

It Really Is All In Your Head
If it's going to be in your life, feel the fear and do it anyway.  Sometimes, simply by acknowledging it, you can move past it.

Practice the Art of Courage
Do something every day that makes you a little bit uncomfortable.  Facing fears and becoming a courageous person (however you may define being courageous) can be a learned skill.  So work at it - give yourself a fearless workout everyday.

Remember What Fear Really Stands For
False
Evidence
Appearing
Real

So face the fear and start writing.  Today.

Here's Today's Takeaway Lesson...
