Day 356...Mental Rules For Writers to Live By Part I

Welcome to Day 356...And mental rules for writers to live by. Part I

I recently read an article in an on-line health and fitness blog that was titled 10 Rules Fit Woman Live By.

It had some good points about what smart woman do to help make their fitness journey successful.

Many of the ideas could be applied to any aspect of your life – including writing.

I’ve updated the author’s points and here’s my take on what smart writers do to make their writing journey successful.

Shut Out the Noise
Specifically those negative thoughts that run through your head. Thoughts about your writing not being good enough, or how you don’t have what it takes to complete your novel. Learn to manage those thoughts and stay positive - I am, I will, Watch me succeed.

Maximize Your Inner Motivation

No one else but you can get you off the couch and sit at your desk to write. You have to want your book written and published. You have to need to have your book written and published. Your motivation has to be so strong that you can’t live with the idea of your book NOT getting written and published. Your motivation to write and to finish your story has to be hard core and take you to the very last page. To build that inner motivation, try focusing on an image that defines your success. Frame that mental picture in your head and let all other factors slip away. Focus on this outcome and let it drive you.

Cultivate Grit
Getting motivated can be easy – especially in the beginning. Staying motivated for the long haul? Not so easy and that’s where grit comes in.
“Grit in psychology is a positive, non-cognitive trait based on an individual's passion for a particular long-term goal or end state, coupled with a powerful motivation to achieve their respective objective.”
Grit is about the highest level of commitment, whereby nothing - not rejection letters from publishing houses, not a negative review, not a spurt of writer’s block – will keep you from finishing and publishing your novel. One way to cultivate that level of commitment is to make your writing time so its an automatic part of your daily routine – like brushing your teeth.

Set Specific Goals & Strategies
Make your writing goals specific and measurable. How many words per day? Which chapters completed by the end of the week? Or the month? Studies show that when goals – any goals – fitness, financial or career – are specific and measurable, you have the greatest chance of successes in completing them.
