Welcome to Day 269...
And the things that make me a better writer...
Let's start with the some of the tangibles like...
A Space to Work.
Here's one of mine...
When the weather is good in the northeast, that's where I head.
When it's cold, snowy, dark or rainy, you'll find me here...
Other must have items...
A Computer
(I have a iPad and a desktop) and a workable software package for writing...the gold standard is Microsoft word, though I've been loving google docs lately for being able to just sign in anywhere, anytime and access my files.
Access to an Online Thesaurus
I simply can not write without this.
Now some of the intangibles...
Fortitude
Also known as strong mindedness, resilience, endurance. I imagine, writing a novel must be like running a marathon. At some point you just want to stop and quit the race. With writing and self-publishing you hit walls...like when you can't figure out how to add a chart to your blog...or finish off the scene with a great cliff hanger...or give a good scenic description. No matter what gets in your way, just keep going.
Consistency
Even if it's just writing one sentence...or typing out a bunch of notes...or updating your website. Just do something, anything...everyday. Because over time, those notes will turn into story lines and those sentences will turn into paragraphs, which turn into chapters which will then my friend turn into your finished book. So work and be productive. Everyday.
A Thick Skin
Make no mistake, the reviews will come in and when they do, some won't be too kind. You must, and I repeat must get over the emotional sting of it all. And then take a good look at what the reviews said - learn from them, correct what you can, and come out of it all determined to be a better writer. You owe it to yourself and your readers.
A Love Affair With Your Story
You'll be spending so much time on your story...brainstorming, writing, and editing, so in a way you need to love the idea, the characters, the locale. I literally fall in love with my stories - which keeps me going to the finish line.
A Closure Issue
I don't like having things left undone or open ended. It's a good trait to get you across the finish line.
Here's Today's Takeaway Lesson...
